WONCA News – January 2019
The latest WONCA News (January 2019) IS NOW AVAILABLE and can be accessed at https://www.wonca.net/News/NewsletterArticle/January2019.aspx

Young Doctors’ Movement News
WONCA is blessed with a very active Young Doctors’ Movement in each of our seven regions, as well as having a young doctor representative on the WONCA Executive. This month’s news contains an article by Ana Nunes Barata, the YDM representative, and includes news from each of the regional YDMs.

Air Health Train the Trainers – Call for Applications
WONCA’s Working Party on the Environment has announced a call for applications for the “Air Health Train the Trainers” Program. This program aims to increase awareness among family doctors and other primary healthcare practitioners– and in turn their patients – in Lower- and Middle-Income countries (LMICs) about the health risks of exposure to air pollution, with the goal of reducing the impacts of air pollution on their patients and communities, especially non-communicable diseases (NCDs) such as Chronic Respiratory and Cardiovascular Diseases, as well as childhood pneumonia. For more details, including how to apply, go to: https://www.wonca.net/News/AirHealthTraintheTrainerapplications.aspx

Featured Doctor: Dr Tze “Lee” Tan (Singapore)
One of this month’s featured doctors, Dr Tze Tan is President of the College of Family Physicians in Singapore. He has been full time family physician, working with his wife and 2 other colleagues in a family practice, in a satellite town, in Singapore for the past 27 years. He is also Adjunct Assistant Professor in family medicine, and teaches both undergraduate and postgraduate students from Singapore’s three medical schools.

Atai Scholarship: Donations Sought
Dr Atai Omorutu was an outstanding Ugandan family doctor. She pioneered the establishment of family medicine program at Makerere University, Uganda and was head of the family medicine department at Makerere University from 2004 to 2011. Atai was an executive member of the WONCA Working Party on Women and Family Medicine (WWPWFM) and was the recipient of WONCA 2016 Global Five Star Doctor Award in recognition of her extraordinary service as a family medicine leader over many years, her service to the people of Uganda, and her extraordinary leadership tackling the Ebola crisis in West Africa.

Sadly she died in 2016, but WWPWFM has established a bursary scheme in her memory, to support African woman doctors to attend regional conferences. You can read more of the bursary scheme – and how to donate – at https://www.wonca.net/member/awards/Ataischolarship.aspx
